I was in need of some new lighting for the Aquaponic Basement Garden and did not want to pay hundreds of dollars just for grow light fixtures. I decided I would make them myself using some air conditioning duct, threaded rods and some cheap parts from the lighting section at the local hardware store. The results were great and here is a video on how I made the grow lights.

I know its not too hot in the basement so it can't be heat. I have a fan moving air through the system so I don't think that is it either. I can only guess there is some type of deficiency that is causing this problem. If someone has a suggestion or possible reason it is happening in my system please post a comment. This is happening on the pepper's as well as tomatoes. I have not had a single fruit develop from either. On the other side of it though, my lettuce, and cabbage have done really well.Aquaponic Basement Gardenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13935605326334834818noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-687899112836569268.post-30451161912045309842011-06-15T05:36:00.000-07:002011-06-15T05:36:24.234-07:00Averted DisasterWell I was lucky I came home from work just in time to catch water overflowing from around the cups in one of my NFT tubes. After turning off the pump really quick I started to access the situation. After a few minutes of looking around. I found the end of the tubes where the 3 collect into one tube and drop down into the fish tank were clogged with beautiful healthy white roots. After pulling apart the tube collection area I had to trim about 3 ft of roots from each tube. After I did this I turned the pump back on and things seem to be running smooth again. I guess this is something I will need to start checking more often. I really don't know what trimming the roots that much will do. Hopefully there will be no adverse effects from trimming them back.Aquaponic Basement Gardenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13935605326334834818noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-687899112836569268.post-54368488207368565592011-06-13T07:39:00.000-07:002011-06-13T07:39:37.447-07:00Suicide Fish!Well we lost a Koi this weekend. I am going to have to build something over the top of the tank. One of the koi was able to jump about 6 inches out of the water and over the edge of the tank. I walked into the basement to find him dried out on the concrete floor. After a short ceremony with his tank friends he was thrown outside for the cats. Hopefully I can get some kind of screen or something over the tank to prevent this in the future.
Added some more Koi to the main tank. They are only about 4 inches long but they will get bigger. My cheap cell phone camera just doesn't do them justice. They really are a beautiful fish. Have 8 Koi all together now. Still that 1 little feeder fish left in there. He gets along good so he is going to stay in there for now.
Also grabbed just a few more feeders to start cycling the new 55 gallon setup. It has been running about 5 days with filter and air stones. Its a lot of tank for only 4 small feeder goldfish.
I have it filled up and starting to cycle. Shouldn't take as long since I am going to add a little water from the established system to it every day. The new system will hopefully be getting some fish after I find a local fish farm. I have not made up my mind what kind but I want to stick with something that is a local fish. This system will be a raft style aquaponics system. I will build the rafts over the top of the tank. I did not take pictures since its just a tank with water in it right now. As soon as something goes in it I will update with pictures.Aquaponic Basement Gardenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13935605326334834818noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-687899112836569268.post-83672243721029241992011-05-29T23:34:00.000-07:002011-05-29T23:34:39.746-07:00As suggested we added some KoiAfter being told the PH was too low at 6.2. Even though everything I had read about goldfish had said anywhere from 5.8 to almost 8 could be handled by them. We have had it at 6.8 the last couple days and guess what, the ones that were alive seem a little livelier and seem to be breathing easier. Go figure. On a suggestion from a few forum members at different Aquaponic forums we picked up some Koi. We were told the Koi would be a little more hearty and tolerant of water conditions than the cheapo feeder goldfish. We got a couple black Koi and platinum Koi. After leaving them in the bag about 30 min I introduced our water into there bag slowly a little more every few minutes. After about 15 min of this I released them and they seem to love it so far. I even got them on sale. I will give this a while and see how it goes. I still want to get some Trout or Tilapia but until then my plants still need food.

There is also a little update on my raised bed garden at the end of the video.
My levels all seem great in the fish tank. I have tons of aeration. I am lost now. Maybe the city water is just poison here or something. I don't know how to test for anything else though. My Nitrites and Nitrates are 0 now. PH is 6.2 I have no ammonia at all.

Down to 4 fish out of about 80 we have bought all together. Not 80 at once.
Any Ideas please help?Aquaponic Basement Gardenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13935605326334834818noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-687899112836569268.post-34908615928324001912011-05-16T05:32:00.000-07:002011-05-16T05:32:59.440-07:00Video update of the Aquaponic Basement Garden May 15, 2011

Thought I would just link to my latest video instead of uploading all the pictures. We had 3 types and it was perfect. My mom was impressed by the aquaponic lettuce and the growth the system has had. I can't wait to plant some more in the grow beds.Aquaponic Basement Gardenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13935605326334834818noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-687899112836569268.post-5778025352560970972011-05-03T21:48:00.000-07:002011-05-03T21:48:05.313-07:00Another update. Nitrite levels coming down but still a little high.My Nitrite levels are beginning to come down. I believe the lack of fish my be part of it with only 4 left. The grow bed running is helping as well though I believe. I have added some of the Swiss Chard seedlings to the NFT system and moved some plants around. In this update notice the tomato roots pictures. They are going crazy.
Put the heater back in the system. I was told that the idea temp for the beneficial bacteria to do their job is between 76 and 85. My system is running about 67 right now. Gotta get it warmer. Hopefully this along with the added grow beds will balance things out. Got to get it right before I add any Tilapia.
There may be 10 of the 50 original left. Sadly the Nitrite level has stayed up and never gone down. I have done water changes and added grow beds (which haven't been going long and need time for the beneficial bacteria to grow in it. I may have overfed them some. I am definitely going to have to add more filtration. The good thing is they were all cheap goldfish and not tilapia or catfish or something. They can be replaced cheap but still disappointing.

After 3 days of water changes here are my readings:

Ammonia - 0
PH - 6.8 to 7
Nitrate - 160 to 180 ppm
Nitrite - between 5 and 10 ppm

These readings if my understanding is correct mean that my system is definitely cycled and the ammonia is being converted to Nitrite like it should but due to not having enough established biological filtration the Nitrites are not being converted to Nitrates. Since Nitrites are just as toxic as Ammonia this is not good. I will continue to try and get things running smooth. I am way too far into this to give up now. One more thing the plants are still doing great. They are green and growing fast.

If anyone has any tips or ideas please post a comment.Aquaponic Basement Gardenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13935605326334834818noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-687899112836569268.post-26608940426388797402011-04-23T20:21:00.000-07:002011-04-23T20:21:21.151-07:00Aquaponic Basement Garden NFT system update

Well another week has gone by. I didn't really get to do much with the system. We had a really beautiful day after a couple rainy days so I worked in my dirt garden and got some much needed yard work done. I decided to take some pictures just to document the growth over the last week.

This is actually a tomato plant that was almost dead outside. It had turned yellow and the tips of the leaves had burned and were getting crunchy. This is it after about 3 or 4 days in the aquaponics system. Still a much duller green than the one in the foreground of the picture but another couple of days and it should be looking good too.
I want to see how well they do in the same system. I want to try and have the tubes on the top tier feed the beds on the lower tier and then everything just drain back to the tank and only use 1 pump. I will be very happy if this works.

Here are some pictures of the beds and the bell siphons installed and system plumbed to drain into the fish tank.
A bit of a problem with a few fish dying but a water change or two and I think I have it under control. I will probably do another in a couple days. The ammonia had spiked but then another check tonight showed no problems. Plants in the system are doing very well. Here are a few pictures so you can see how green and healthy they look.

This is a tomato plant I threw in to see if I get nurse it back from starting to look yellow. I think its looking a lot better.
Its the equivalent of a normal 350 watt bulb. This bulb puts out 4000 lumens and has a color temp of 2700k. I think it will be best for tomato and pepper plants fruiting.
I should have taken new pictures tonight cause I can tell they are really starting to take off. I see a difference every day now when I get home from work. Sorry for the way the close up picture came out. The grow lights really mess with the close up pictures for some reason. What you don't get to see here is the root growth. Each cup now has several roots coming out of each one that are a couple inches in length. So far so good just need to figure out why I have had those few fish dye off now.
I mean I added 50 fish and this is the first one to die. I figured things were ok but still checked the water readings and things seamed fine. Honestly the levels haven't changed much since adding the fish. PH may have gone up just slightly. System is still not finished cycling yet though. I checked again yesterday and found another dead fish and a few moving slowly. I also noticed now the water getting cloudy. I think I might have been overfeeding. I am going to cut back for a few days and see what happens. I also need to add water to the system even with the cool temps in the basement I am still losing a bit to evaporation. I have noticed a few gnats or maybe fruit flies around the plants the last couple days. I won't use pesticides in this system so hopefully a few stick fly traps will work. Keep you guys updated on the status of the fish with an update this coming weekend.
On a side not I found a large 65 watt CFL bulb that I am going to work into the system lighting. It puts out 4400 lumens and light temp 2700k. It is quite bright and I think it will help with peppers I am going to add to the system this weekend. I changed out some of the bulbs in the neon fixtures as well. I am now using 1 bulb light temp 6500k and 1 bulb 3300k in each fixture. The plants really seem to like this now.Aquaponic Basement Gardenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13935605326334834818noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-687899112836569268.post-5975823605442813042011-03-27T16:50:00.000-07:002011-03-27T16:50:57.261-07:00A few test plants.

We added the fish today and I couldn't help myself. I had to put a few plants in just to give it a try. I want to compare how they do in the system compared to the ones in soil waiting to go outside. I only added enough lighting to the system for the 8 plants I am testing. I had to lower them a lot to get them where they needed to be for these seedlings. I will get the rest of the lighting installed next weekend and check the system to see how its doing.
This kit allows me to test PH, Nitrate, Nitrite, Carbonate and General Hardness by dipping 1 little strip in the water. I will test once a week and keep a log of levels.
After checking the levels and making sure everything was ok to add the starter goldfish we added 50 small goldfish we picked up from the pet store. They are really cheap and only cost about $5.50 for all of them. I added 10 at a time and spread it out over a couple hours to watch and make sure there were no problems. Just in case some started dying for some odd reason I wouldn't lose the whole batch. Below are some pictures of the fish in the bag from the store and then sitting in the tank getting acclimated to our water temperature.
They are on the small size compared to this tank so they are a little hard to see. I also added some large river pebbles from an established tank we have. I think this will help get things going in the system.
Some really nice guys there. They were very helpful and even have some hydroponic systems up and running in their store. They have a really cool Geodesic dome green house behind their shop as well. I hope to go back and pick up a couple of the lighting systems they had for sale.

Well here is a shot of the hydroton in the solo cups and waiting to be planted after the tank cycles with fish.
Below I thought I'd throw in a shot of the tank I am setting up that will be part of a grow bed system and possibly have a raft system right on top of the water instead of putting on a lid.
This shows the water returning to the tank looks like its creating a pretty good amount of oxygenation by itself.
